Info about Elza Soares and her latest album “Woman at the End of the World”, taken from waxpoetics:
In 2015, septuagenarian Brazilian music icon Elza Soares teamed up with the cream of São Paulo’s avant-garde musicians to record an album of apocalyptic, experimental samba sujo (“dirty samba”). Woman at the End of the World, as the finished set of music was titled, takes a searing look at issues of twenty-first-century Brazil far more serious than football or resort beaches, tackling racism, domestic violence, sex, and drug addiction.
A true legend of Brazilian music, Soares’s musical oeuvre stretches back over nearly seven decades, traversing samba, jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, and even electronica, but it is her life story—a rags-to-riches-to-rags rollercoaster of triumphs and tragedies—that has made her a voice for Brazil’s repressed female, Black, gay and working class populations, and given her the gravitas to address the topics she does so pithily on her latest album.
Woman at the End of the World documents the latest chapter in the soap opera that is Elza Soares’s life. São Paulo’s cutting-edge samba sujo scene has adopted her as an unofficial muse, with producer Guilherme Kastrup creating an album that walks a tightrope between post-rock and post-samba, and speaks of, and to, a country in deep crisis. It is her thirty-fourth studio album but the first to feature 100% previously unrecorded material, exclusively composed for her.
“Sex and blackness,” was Soares’s reply to Kastrup when he asked what she wanted this album to be about. Scrapping his original idea to record an album of classic sambas, he instead invited (in Soares’s words) “wonderful, crazy musicians” from underground São Paulo band Passo Torto to form the volcanic and immediately gripping songs that comprise the new release.
“Music is protest,” says Elza. “While there are still Black people taking a beating we will have music to make.”
Woman at the End of the World was voted Best Album of 2015 by Rolling Stone Brazil and has been released worldwide by U.K.-based label Mais Um Discos in June 2016.
